Darlington Arrays

Darlington devices are high-voltage, high-current switch arrays containing multiple open-collector Darlington pairs or multiple Darlington transistors with common emitters, and integral suppression diodes for inductive loads. The nominal current rating of each output is 500 mA for the 7- and 8-output devices and up to 1.5 A for quad-output devices. The inputs are pinned opposite the outputs to simplify the application board layout. These devices interface standard logic families.

ST’s microprocessor supervisors are more sophisticated devices that can include watchdog and early power-fail warnings (power-fail in/power-fail out (PFI/PFO)), push-button reset functions and battery monitoring. Microprocessor supervisors with a switchover function preserve SRAM data in the absence of system power by automatically switching to batter backup when power fails. A chip-enable gate automatically write-protects the SRAM when the Vcc begins to fall.

Protection against electrostatic discharges (ESD) is part of EMC Immunity (Electro Magnetic Compatibility) requirements. It is the ability for equipment to properly operate in its electromagnetic environment by limiting the reception of electromagnetic energy that may cause physical damage. ESD can be either conducted under the form of a transient voltage or can be radiated due to its fast rising time: powerful harmonics will generate erratic behavior by the application by coupling with other signals. Printed circuit boards must be protected against the effects of electrostatic discharge.
