High Voltage Differential Probes
-
A high voltage differential probe is used for measuring the voltage difference between two test points where neither test point is at ground. High voltage differential probes from Tektronix can be used for signals up to 6000 V. These probes are the best choice for making non-ground referenced, floating or isolated measurements in large part due to their common mode rejection capability. These products are designed, manufactured, and serviced by Tektronix.

Differential Voltage Probes
DP150/DP200pro
-
The DP differential isolation probes are an important accessory for any laboratory involved in power electronics and high voltage systems. These probes allow isolated and floating measurements with any oscilloscope or data recorder, whilst the oscilloscope can remain grounded. Using a DP150 or DP200pro probe, differential and floating measurements can be made on a variety of ac power systems like 230V/110V ac input power supplies, chopped and switching power supplies, thyristor controllers, variable speed motor drives (PWM signals), motor inrush current and measurement across current shunts. The isolated input is made via two 4mm/banana safety sockets. The BNC output allows easy connection to an oscilloscope. The DP probes can be powered from a 9V battery or external power supply.

Other Passive Probes
-
Probes connect the input of the oscilloscope to test points on the device under test (DUT). There are many types, including: high impedance passive, low capacitance, single-ended active, differential active, high voltage, and current probes. This is the first in a series of three articles on probe selection and application, and will focus on passive probes. Part 2 and part 3 will address active probes and current probes, respectively.

High Voltage Probe: Single-Ended
-
A high voltage single-ended probe is typically used for measuring ground referenced signals up to 40 kV. However, some single-ended probes are designed for oscilloscopes with isolated or floating inputs for measurements that are not ground referenced. Users should select probes with a low input capacitance specification (< 4 pF) to minimize the probe’s loading effect on the circuit because a probe with lower input capacitance will offer higher input impedance at higher frequencies.
