A sound level meter is a measuring instrument used to assess noise or sound levels by measuring sound pressure. Often referred to as a sound pressure level (SPL) meter, decibel (dB) meter, noise meter or noise dosimeter, a sound level meter uses a microphone to capture sound. The sound is then evaluated within the sound level meter and acoustic measurement values are shown on the display of the sound level meter. The most common unit of acoustic measurement for sound is the decibel (dB); however, some sound level meter devices also determine the equivalent continuous sound level (Leq) and other acoustic parameters. With a portable sound level meter, industrial hygiene and workplace safety professionals can measure sound levels in multiple locations to ensure environmental conditions fall within recommended exposure limits (RELs). Some sound level meter devices can be permanently installed for continuous monitoring of sound levels at a work or job site.An important attribute to consider when searching for a suitable sound level meter is its type or class. The type or class of a sound level meter defines the device's accuracy as per American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) guidelines. Typically, "type" is the grade according to the ANSI S1.4 standard, whereas "class" is the grade according to the IEC 61672 standard. There are two types or classes assigned to sound level meters: type 1 / class 1 or type 2 / class 2. For assessing noise in basic industrial, commercial, educational, recreational or residential applications, a type 2 / class 2 sound level meter usually will suffice. For precision-grade assessments often made in a laboratory, a type 1 / class 1 sound level meter primarily is used. A flame ionization detector converts a hydrocarbon gas concentration into an electrical signal. The flame is hydrogen fueled and burns in hydrocarbon free combustion air. Either side of the flame are two electrodes between which an electric field is generated by means of a polarization voltage. The sample is pre-mixed with the fuel gas and heated in the flame to a temperature at which the hydrocarbon molecules ‘crack’ and CH fragments appear. These CH fragments are oxidated by the oxygen in the combustion air resulting in the formation of CHO+ ions. The ion current then passes to the electrodes and the resulting current measured is proportional to the quantity of C atoms derived from organic compounds.The Thermo-FID features two separate microprocessor controlled pressure compensations to avoid any influence from environmental or sample conditions. In addition, the complete Thermo-FID range of analyzers are equipped with a flame trap that is used as a heated sample inlet filter. The measurement chamber and all material in contact with the sample gas are heated between 120°C and 200°C to avoid condensation.

The GeoSwath Plus is a 500kHz interferometric sonar, or phase detecting bathymetric sonar (PDBS) from Kongsberg GeoAcoustics. Boat-mounted GeoSwath sonars are used worldwide for high accuracy surveys including port and harbour navigation and environmental mapping: the Gavia’s GeoSwath module makes this capability available in a commercial AUV. The GeoSwath Plus offers: wide swath coverage of up to 12 times the AUV altitude when near the seabed; integrated bathymetry with simultaneous true digital side scan; high depth resolution suitable for IHO survey standards; as well as the accuracy and repeatability of a boat-mount hydrographic survey system. Like most of the survey-grade sensors on the Gavia AUV, the GeoSwath data is time-synchronised with the AUV master clock using the vehicle PPS/ZDA system. Benefits of the GeoSwath AUV module include ease of deployment, ease of use, reducing survey time, and the ability to take a 500kHz high-resolution sonar down to targets in 1000m of water. The GeoSwath Plus post-processing software (provided as standard with the system) allows a user to inspect and process the data, create and inspect digital terrain models, and create basic sonar mosaics. Several other commercial post-processing software packages are also available, please ask for details. Note that for best results the GeoSwath Module should be deployed with a direct-reading sound velocity sensor (option) in the Control Module, and one of the high-accuracy INS/DVL Navigation Modules for motion sensing.
