Versatile, compact and flexible – Incremental encodersIncremental encoders are used when retention of absolute position upon power loss is not required. These encoders provide information about the position, angle and number of revolutions. The number of lines per revolution determines the resolution. The current position can be determined by counting these pulses from a reference point. Upon activating the machine, a reference run to the reference point is required to determine the absolute position of the encoder.

Incremental Encoders
-
Incremental encoders provide a relative position with respect to a "home" or zero position. US Digital offers incremental encoders as kits ready for assembly and shaft-equipped encoders, using both optical and magnetic technologies. Also in stock and immediately available are encoder modules and encoder components such as disks and hubdisks.

Contacting Encoders
-
Rotary encoders are ideal for use as digital panel controls or position sensing devices in a wide range of applications where digital circuitry is used. These devices are available in contacting and optical types and in various resolutions. Some models are available with push momentary switch and detents.

The magnetic encoder detects rotational position information as changes of the magnetic field, converts them into electrical signals, and outputs them. The simplest magnetic encoder consists of a permanent magnet and a magnetic sensor.

Open Optical Encoders
-
An optical encoder is an electromechanical device which produces an electrical signal output proportional to the linear displacement of a linear guide or the angular position of an input shaft.Open encoders are exposed and feature no external integrated enclosure. The advantages of open optical encoders include the effective elimination of backlash, shaft wind-up (torsion) and other mechanical hysteresis errors.A rotary open optical encoder consists of a position measurement readhead and an accurate rotary scale marked either on the periphery of a ring or on the face of a disc. The readhead measures position by optically sensing the regularly-spaced scale markings and outputs this information as an analogue or digital signal. The signal is subsequently converted into a position reading by a digital readout (DRO) or motion controller.
