Time-Resolved Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance
400C Series
The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is a variant of acoustic wave microsensors that are capable of ultrasensitive mass measurements. Under favorable conditions, a typical QCM can measure a mass change of 0.1-1 ng/cm2. QCM oscillates in a mechanically resonant shear mode under the influence of a high frequency AC electric field which is applied across the thickness of the crystal. Figure 1b below shows an edge view of a QCM crystal undergoing oscillatory shear distortion. The central portions of the top and bottom of the crystal are coated with a typically disk-shaped thin metal film (e.g., gold).

Open-Source Quartz Crystal Microbalance
The sensor is a surface sensitive quartz crystal capable of measuring phenomena at molecular scale. It works in vacuum, air and liquid environments. The QCM sensor is based on the piezoelectric properties of the quartz crystal. The application of an alternating current causes the mechanical vibration of the quartz crystal in the MHz range. The QCM technique measures the variations in quartz frequency for measuring the mass variations on its surface.

Differential Quartz Crystal Microbalance
Dike
During an experiment to detect an affinity reaction on biological material, a molecule of interest is attached to the quartz crystal of the measurement channel, this deposition can be achieved by direct binding or by capture through another protein, the result of this process is to make the quartz sensitive to the molecule to be detected.

Quartz Crystals
Quartz crystal resonators are used in a wide range of electronic applications that require timing devices. The quality of the quartz crystal blank is critical to the performance of quartz crystal units and the high Q factor of quartz means that tight stabilities can be achieved; this is key to ensuring microprocessor timing circuits work correctly within customer’s designs.

voltage controlled crystal oscillator
VCXO
A VCXO (Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator) is a crystal oscillator the output frequency of which is controlled by adding an external control voltage via a frequency control input on a variable capacitance component such as a varactor diode connected in parallel to a load capacitance (CL). Epson VCXOs are divided into two types according to Voltage-Frequency (V-F) characteristic slopes depending on the AFC (Automatic Frequency Control) input configuration of the VCXO. One is a VCXO with a positive V-F slope and the other is a VCXO with a negative V-F slope. Please note that the input voltage of a control circuit will vary according to the individual type, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Epson's VCXOs are capable of either, depending on the customer's preference. Epson's VCXOs have been increasingly used for broader applications such as slave oscillators in phased-lock loops, or frequency modulators. Among the above types, a VCXO combined with a TCXO is called a VC-TCXO , respectively. These components have the merit of delicately controlling their output frequency electrically.

3-Component Quartz Force Rings
260 Series
Three-component quartz force ring sensors are capable of simultaneously measuring dynamic force in three orthogonal directions (X, Y, and Z). They contain three sets of quartz plates that are stacked in a preloaded arrangement. Each set responds to the vector component of an applied force acting along its sensitive axis. 3-component ring force sensors must be statically preloaded for optimum performance. Preloading provides the sensing elements with the compressive loading required to allow the proper transmission of shear forces. Versions are available with ranges up to 10k lb (45k N) in the z-axis (perpendicular to the top surface), and up to 4000 lb (18k N) in the x-and y (shear) axes. Both ICP® and charge output styles are available.

Miniature Quartz Force Sensors
Often the test engineer will try to take low level measurements with a sensors not rated for these low levels. Due to insufficient sensitivity the resulting data may be noisy, hard to analyze or unusable. Using the appropriately sized and ranged PCB Miniature Quartz Force Sensor solves the problem and gives reliable data at a Low Amplitude level. The miniature sensor configuration permits low-amplitude, dynamic compression, tension, and impact force measurements.

General Purpose Quartz Force Sensors
General purpose force sensors are offered in either stud or axial mounted configurations. They are internally pre-loaded and can be used for dynamic compression, tension, and impact force measurements. Tapped mounting holes on both ends of the radial connector style support link, platform, integrated link, and free-standing installations. The axial mounted type offers protection of the electrical connector and sensor cable from potential damage during drop testing and in free-standing installations. Supplied impact caps facilitate impact and drop force measurements.

Temperature compensated crystal oscillator
TCXO
A TCXO (Temperature compensated crystal oscillator) is a crystal oscillator with a temperature-sensitive reactance circuit in its oscillation loop to compensate the frequency-temperature characteristics inherent to the crystal unit. Epson's are classified into two types. One is a Direct-Type TCXOwith a temperature compensation circuit built into the oscillation loop. The other is an Indirect-Type TCXO with a temperature compensation circuit outside the oscillation loop, in which the oscillation frequency is therefore indirectly controlled.
