The main body of this unique extensometer remains stationary during testing, held in position by the adjustable magnetic base included. Only the very light, small traveling heads move as the sample elongates during a test. These attach to the sample with small spring clips. Each head pulls a cord out from the extensometer as the head moves. These models use high precision, low friction potentiometers, and, as a result, have a wide range of factory selectable outputs. The extensometer is driven by an excitation voltage and has output proportional to the input. They can be provided with high level outputs (approximately 2-8 VDC) or ones that mimic strain gaged devices (2-4 mV/V). When set to mimic strain gaged extensometers, the Model 3800 can be used with virtually any signal conditioning electronics designed for strain gaged sensors. The potentiometers employ a hybrid wire wound around conductive plastic, which provides excellent long term stability. The output from the extensometer is readily interfaced with most existing test controllers, and may be directly input to data acquisition systems and chart recorders. Strain Sensors

Conventional strain sensors are based on strain gage technology. In order to effectively measure the strain values in a force or load measurement application, a full, 4 element strain gage bridge circuit is utilized. The configuration is known as a Wheatstone Bridge Circuit. A Wheatstone Bridge has a very linear output in it’s midrange. That being considered +100% to -100% of range. Unfortunately, a Wheatstone Bridge becomes non-linear above the upper and lower extremes of range. Therefore, significant errors can result above the end points when attempting to take precision measurements. It is particularly important to take accurate measurements in some R&D or control applications. To avoid the mentioned error issues, PCB manufactures quartz piezoelectric strain sensors that output the same mV/microstrain sensitivity throughout the entire useful range. Thus, accuracy is improved and control requirements are enhanced that may occur at positive extremes of the measurement range. The models RHM240 and model 740B02 series sensors are the strain sensors for these applications.

For indirect tensile testing, such as for resilient modulus, these extensometers measure the lateral deformation of specimens. They are self-supporting on the sample and clip on in seconds. The traditional way this deformation has been measured was prone to errors caused by slight rocking of the sample as it is loaded. The self-supporting design of the Model 3911 eliminates this problem. This unit will handle the dynamic pulse requirements of resilient modulus testing.The speed of mounting makes test set-up much faster than with the older method. The pivot mounting used ensures that the specimen contact pads meet the often uneven asphalt surface as well as possible. The measuring range options available allow a wide range of testing, yet can easily measure the sometimes very small displacements required.The Model 3911 extensometers are strain gaged devices, making them compatible with any electronics designed for strain gaged transducers. Most often they are connected to a test machine controller. The signal conditioning electronics for the extensometer is typically included with the test machine controller or may often be added. In this case the extensometer is shipped with the proper connector and wiring to plug directly into the electronics. For systems lacking the required electronics, Epsilon can provide a variety of solutions, allowing the extensometer output to be connected to data acquisition boards, chart recorders or other equipment.

After tensile testing, flexural tests are the most common strength tests for plastics and other resins. The main standards for plastic flexural (bend) tests are ISO 178, JIS K 7171, and ASTM D790, which require very accurate test systems. These standards include flexural strain measurements using a deflectometer, ranging from micro-strain measurements in the elastic region, the reversible elongation at the beginning of tests, to larger strain measurements in the plastic region. Shimadzu's deflectometers integrate easily into AG-X plus series, AGS-X series, and EZ-X test frames and Trapezium X testing software. Since these deflectometers push up against the specimen from below, the specimen color is not a limiting factor, as can be for laser type non-contact deflectometers. Furthermore, these deflectometers can partially absorb the shock during specimen failure, preventing specimen fragments from scattering.
